Aït Ben Haddou is a ksar — a fortified village of packed earth and straw — on the bank of the Ounila river, about 30 km before Ouarzazate. It is on the UNESCO list, it has appeared in more films than most people can name, and a handful of families still live inside. You reach it from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which is the real reason the drive takes four hours: the road climbs to 2,260 m and comes down through Berber villages on the other side. Ouarzazate, half an hour further, is the practical town of the region: the Atlas film studios, the Taourirt kasbah, and the junction where the road splits towards the Dades Valley (for Merzouga) or the Draa Valley (for Zagora). On our 3-day desert tours you see both on day one; on the day trip you have the whole morning for the ksar.
Cross the river on the stepping stones, climb the alleys to the granary at the top, and look back over the valley. Go before 11:00 and you share it with almost no one.
Hairpins, a viewpoint at the top, mint tea at a roadside café, and a different climate on each side. The drive is part of the day.
Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia: the studios in Ouarzazate are open to visitors, and the ksar itself is the set you already know.
From Ouarzazate the Sahara starts to feel close: the palm groves begin, the light changes, and the kasbah road to Dades or the Draa Valley to Zagora opens up.
About an hour with a local guide (an add-on on our tours; recommended — the history is not obvious without one) or on your own. Steep in places; sandals are fine but flip-flops are not. A few families still live inside and some houses sell tea and crafts. The best photographs are from the new village on the other bank, in the morning.
A working town, not a postcard. Worth an hour for the Taourirt kasbah and, if you like cinema, the Atlas Studios. Most of our tours stop here for lunch or pass through; the 2-day Fint Oasis trip sleeps here.
