In short

The Sahara most people mean

Merzouga is a small village on the western edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of orange dunes roughly 28 km long and up to about 150 m high. When people say "the Sahara desert tour from Marrakech", this is almost always where they end up. You arrive in the late afternoon, ride a camel into the dunes for about an hour, watch the sun go down, eat and sleep in a camp, and climb a dune before sunrise.

It is a long way from anywhere — two full days of driving from Marrakech, round trip — which is why almost every itinerary makes it a 3-day trip at minimum. The road there passes Aït Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge; from Fes it comes down the Ziz Valley.

The dunes themselves

Erg Chebbi is the biggest erg in Morocco you can reach by normal road. Zagora and Agafay are closer, but they are not this.

A night in camp

Dinner by lantern light, drums by the fire, a real bed in a tent, and a sky with no light pollution.

About one hour each way, in a small caravan.

It is comfortable for most people but not for everyone: if you have back or hip problems, tell us and we arrange a 4x4 transfer to the camp instead. Children ride with an adult or on their own camel depending on age. The trek is included whether or not you use it.

Both types sit inside the dunes, not at the edge.

A standard camp has private tents with proper beds and shared bathrooms with hot water. A luxury camp has en-suite tents with a private bathroom, better bedding, and usually a lounge area. On our shared tours the standard camp is included and luxury is an option; on private tours the luxury camp is included.

Milky Way over a Sahara desert camp in Merzouga — No street lights for 50 km

A quiet village and a very dark sky.

Merzouga itself is a few streets, some auberges and a small market. Nearby Khamlia is known for Gnaoua music, and Rissani has one of the more interesting markets in the south (Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday). Neither is on the standard 3-day route; both appear on the 4-day itineraries. If stars matter to you, check the moon phase before choosing dates — a full moon is beautiful but washes out the stars.
