The Draa is Morocco's longest river, and south of Ouarzazate it becomes a valley of palm groves and earth villages that runs for about 200 km to Zagora and on to M'Hamid, where the road ends and the real Sahara starts. Zagora itself is a small, dusty town whose fame rests on a painted sign — "Tombouctou 52 jours", by camel — and on being the closest place to Marrakech where you can spend a night in a desert camp with some sand under it. The dunes here are small (Tinfou, a few metres high) compared with Merzouga's, and we say so plainly: Zagora is the right choice when you have two days and want a real night in the desert, not when you want the big dunes. The valley itself — Agdz, the kasbah of Tamnougalt, the pottery village of Tamegroute with its green-glazed ceramics and its old library — is the reason the two days are not just about the camp.
Leave Marrakech at 07:00, sleep in a camp that evening, back the next night. No other Sahara camp is this close.

From Zagora, another two hours and a 4x4 take you to the big empty dunes of Chigaga. For those with three or four days.
Day one: the Tichka pass, Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Draa Valley, Zagora by late afternoon, a short camel ride into the Tinfou dunes and the camp. Day two: sunrise, breakfast, Tamegroute, the valley back north, Marrakech around 19:00. It is a lot of driving — about 13 hours over two days — and we say so.
Small. You will be in sand, the sky is huge, the night is silent. But if you have seen photos of dunes 150 m high, that is Merzouga, not here. People who understand this in advance love Zagora; people who expected Merzouga are disappointed.
