The green valley on Marrakech's doorstep: a river out of the High Atlas, villages on the slopes, terraces over the water. The easy half day when the city gets loud.
Follow the road south from Marrakech and within an hour the plain ends, the road enters a valley and the Ourika river appears, with villages of stone and earth stacked on the slopes and cafés with tables in the water. Setti Fatma, at the end of the tarmac, is the village where short walks start — to the first of seven small waterfalls, twenty minutes up — and where most people have tea or lunch. The Ourika is not the Sahara and it is not Toubkal; it is the valley Marrakech goes to on a Sunday, and it is a very good use of an afternoon. Our shared Ourika evening trip leaves at 15:00, gives you the valley in the late light, a walk to the first waterfall and dinner or tea on a riverside terrace, and returns to Marrakech around 21:00. Private versions run at any time, with a longer walk or a Berber house visit added.
The only Atlas valley you can visit between lunch and dinner.

A twenty-minute scramble from Setti Fatma, easy with a local guide, to a pool and a small fall.
The evening trip is timed for the sun dropping behind the ridges on the way back.

The waterfall path is short but steep and rocky; trainers. For a real walk (three hours to more of the falls, or a village-to-village trail), ask for the private version with an earlier start.
Private trips can stop at a family house for tea and bread, and at the Tnine Ourika Monday souk when the date fits.
