Ouzoud Waterfalls

The tallest waterfall in Morocco drops 110 m into a green gorge of olive trees, two and a half hours from Marrakech. A day of walking, water and macaques — and, in season, other people.

Ouzoud Waterfalls

Ouzoud is the day trip Marrakech does when it wants green instead of red: a river that falls in three tiers into a gorge, olive groves on the rim, a path of steps that winds down past cafés and viewpoints to the pools at the bottom, and wooden boats that take you under the spray for a few dirhams. Barbary macaques live in the trees along the path and are used to people. It is popular, and we say so: on a spring weekend the path is busy. Our shared day trip leaves Marrakech at 07:00 to arrive before the crowds, gives you three to four hours at the falls with lunch by the water, and is back in Marrakech around 18:30. It is a good day for families, for people who have done the desert already, and for anyone who wants to walk.

What to expect

Before you go

07:00 pick-up (shared) · 2.5 h drive with a coffee stop · arrive about 10:00 · viewpoint, walk down, boats, lunch at a riverside café (own account, paid on site) · walk up · leave about 14:30 · Marrakech about 18:00–18:30.

About 45 minutes down and the same up, with plenty of stops. Steps are uneven; trainers, not sandals. A local guide is included on our shared day trip for the path and the history .

Most in March–June after the snowmelt; in late summer the flow is lower but still falls. Swimming in the pools is possible when the level is safe.

When to go

Best time to visit

March–June: the strongest flow, green gorge, wildflowers. The best.
September–November: warm, quieter, lower water.
July–August: hot, busy with local visitors, but the water is the point.
December–February: cool, quiet, sometimes wet; the falls are full after rain.

Before you go

How long is the drive?

About 2.5 hours each way, so five hours in the car for three to four at the falls. It is a full day.

Is it good for children?

Yes, from about four or five: the walk has steps but is short, the boats are a hit, and there is lunch by the water. Younger children in carriers, not buggies.

Can we swim?

In the lower pools when the level is safe, mostly in summer and early autumn. Ask the guide on the day.

Ouzoud or Ourika?

Ouzoud is the bigger day (2.5 h each way) and the bigger sight. Ourika is an hour away and works as a half day or an evening.
