Volubilis was a Roman city at the far edge of the empire, and what remains — an arch, a basilica, columns, and floor mosaics still in place in the houses that owned them — sits in an open landscape of olive groves and wheat with the town of Moulay Idriss on the hill behind. It is an hour west of Fes and the best stop on the road north to Chefchaouen. Meknes, 30 km south, was the capital under Moulay Ismail in the 17th century: Bab Mansour, the largest gate in the country, the royal stables and granaries, a quieter medina than Fes. On our 6-day journeys the morning goes to Volubilis and Meknes (or Moulay Idriss, if you prefer a small town to a big gate), and the afternoon to the road into the Rif. Both are worth a full day if you have one; on our routes they get a good half.

About 1.5–2 hours on site, mostly on flat paths with some uneven stone. A local guide is worth it for the mosaics' stories. No shade; hat and water in summer.
An hour: Bab Mansour, the Place el-Hedim, the Heri es-Souani granaries if time allows. Lunch here or in Moulay Idriss.
