The map problem
On a map, Marrakech and Merzouga look close. They are 560 km apart across the High Atlas, and the road between them is slow, beautiful and full of things worth stopping for. Nine to ten hours of driving each way is the number that decides everything else.
One day: the Atlas and a kasbah, not the desert
A day trip reaches Aït Ben Haddou — over the Tichka pass, the ksar, lunch, back by evening — or the Ouzoud waterfalls, or the Ourika Valley in an afternoon. No day trip reaches the Sahara. Two days: a camp night, small dunes
Two days reaches Zagora: the ksar on the way, the Draa Valley palm groves, a camel ride into the Tinfou dunes and a night in a camp, home the next evening. Three days: the big dunes, the minimum
The standard and the reason it is standard. Day one: Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou, night in the Dades Valley (about 6 h). Day two: the gorges, then Merzouga, camels, the camp (about 5 h). Four days: the same desert, none of the rush
The fourth day is spent where it counts, not on the road. Two ways to use it: a shorter first day ending in the Skoura palm grove and a return through the Draa Valley, or a second desert night in a lodge by the dunes with a 4x4 morning round the erg (Khamlia, the nomads). Five and six days: mountain, desert, the north
Five days puts Toubkal — two days on foot to 4,167 m — before the three-day desert loop. Loop or one way
If you are visiting both Marrakech and Fes, the desert is the best way between them: three days, no road twice, and you arrive in the other city instead of driving nine hours back. Our recommendation
Three days if it is all you have. Four if you can. One way if you are seeing two cities. Two only if you accept small dunes. One day: a kasbah, not the desert. And tell us your dates — we will say which we would take.
