The short answer
If you type "Sahara from Marrakech" into a search engine you get three destinations sold with the same photographs, and they are not the same thing. Merzouga is the real erg — dunes up to 150 m high — and it takes three days minimum. Zagora is a smaller desert with a real camp night, reachable in two. Agafay is a stony plateau forty minutes from the city where you can have dinner by a fire and be back for bed. If you have three days, go to Merzouga. If you have two, Zagora — knowing the dunes are small. If you have an evening, Agafay, and don't call it the Sahara. And if you have three or four days and have already seen Merzouga, or want the dunes to yourselves, there is a fourth: Erg Chigaga.
What each one actually is
Merzouga / Erg Chebbi. A village at the edge of a field of dunes 28 km long and up to about 150 m high, near the Algerian border. About 560 km from Marrakech — nine to ten hours of driving, which every tour splits over two days with a night in the Dades Valley. The camps are inside the dunes. Zagora / Tinfou. A town at the end of the Draa Valley, about 360 km and six to seven hours from Marrakech, with a patch of dunes a few metres high at Tinfou, 25 km south. Camps sit at their edge. The road there — palm groves, kasbahs, Aït Ben Haddou on the way — is the best part of the trip. → Draa Valley & Zagora
Agafay. A rocky plateau 40 km south-west of Marrakech with the Atlas as a backdrop. No sand. Luxury camps, camel rides at golden hour, dinners by a fire, stars. A dinner, not a journey. (We don't run Agafay as a standard tour; it appears on Elite journeys.)
Erg Chigaga. Forty kilometres of dunes beyond the end of the tarmac at M'Hamid, 90 km south of Zagora, reached by an hour and a half of 4x4 piste. Lower than Merzouga's dunes (up to ~60 m), far emptier, private tours only. → Erg Chigaga & M'Hamid

Merzouga in detail
The tour most people take first and the one we would recommend first. Day one crosses the Atlas to Aït Ben Haddou and sleeps in the Dades Valley; day two walks the Todra Gorge and reaches the dunes for sunset; day three climbs a dune at sunrise and drives home. The road is the reason it is worth three days: kasbahs, gorges, palm valleys. The camp night is what people remember. Standard camps have private tents and shared bathrooms; luxury camps a bathroom in your tent. Zagora in detail
The right choice when two days is all you have and you want a night in a camp with sand under it — not when you want the dunes in the photos. The Draa Valley is beautiful; Tamegroute's pottery and library are a real stop; the camp night is quiet and dark. The dunes are small, and everyone who books it should know that before they go. Agafay in detail
An hour from the city, a plateau of pale stone with the Atlas behind it. Leave at four, ride a camel at golden hour, dinner by a fire, back by eleven — or sleep in a luxury camp. It is a good evening and a beautiful place; it is not the Sahara, and the operators who sell it as "desert camp Marrakech" are counting on you not knowing. We use Agafay on Elite journeys as a first or last night under canvas. If you want it as a stand-alone evening, ask us.
Erg Chigaga, the fourth option
Wilder, emptier, harder to reach. From Zagora, two hours to M'Hamid and then the piste: dry lake, scrub, the first dunes, the erg. A handful of camps spread over 40 km; most nights you see no other light. Private 4x4 tours only, three or four days, out through Foum Zguid so nothing is driven twice. First Sahara: Merzouga. - Three days, first time, want the dunes you've seen: Merzouga, shared or private.
- Four days: Merzouga with Skoura and a lodge night, or the Zagora + Merzouga loop.
- Two days, want a camp night: Zagora, eyes open about the dunes.
- Two days, want quiet more than sand: the Fint Oasis instead.
- An evening: Agafay.
- Three or four days, second visit, solitude: Erg Chigaga.
